Communication Training with AI-Driven Virtual Patients

Problem Statement:

Collecting patient complaints and medical histories is a fundamental clinical skill. Traditionally, this is taught using actors, simulated patients (SPs). However, this approach presents significant organizational and financial challenges.

Hypothesis:

Preliminary communication training with AI-based virtual simulated patients (AI-VSPs) enables students to practice essential communication skills, thereby enhancing performance during subsequent SP sessions.

Objective:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the communication training using AI-VSPs in improving clinical communication with SPs.

Methodology:

Students will be randomly divided into two groups. The control group (1) will receive written case materials and role descriptions. The experimental group (2) will receive the same materials and additionally run 5 cases interacting with AI-VSPs. All participants of both groups will then complete a standardized session with an SP, blindly assessed using a structured checklist.
